It begins with a single step

This is a story about a journey. A story about change. A story about motivation, dedication, determination, movement and strength. This is my friend Billie's story.

Billie's journey began 15 months and 70 lbs ago. With the arrival of her 40th birthday she knew she didn't like who she saw when she looked in the mirror. She decided it was time to do something about it. At 40 she was a hard working single mother who never took time to take care of herself. She was stuck in a lifestyle filled with stress, a lack of energy, unhealthy eating habits, living on caffeine, and stuck in an cycle of chemical induced sleep patterns. Unhappy and unhealthy.

To help in her journey, Billie found a trainer who could help her make some big changes and went to work. Cardio, weight training, yoga, dance classes.. all a part of her plan to get moving and improve her life. 


Now, after 15 months (loads of hard work and buckets of sweat) into her journey, it's beautiful to see the changes that have been made. I asked Billie if she was happy with what she now see's reflected in the mirror, the answer was positive and proactive "Much happier. I"m on my way, I'm not done yet. My journey isn't over."

When I asked Camilo (her trainer) what it was about Billie that has allowed her to keep going and to make these changes, he responded "willpower, dedication, and trust in her trainer." 

It takes a lot of courage and a lot of strength to change the things we don't like within ourselves. These changes don't happen over night and it takes a lot of fight to keep going. I think in regards to fitness a lot of times we put the reward in the numbers we see reflected in the scale, but there is a much bigger reward if we will open our eyes to it. The quality of life.

I asked Billie if she would share in her own words how these changes have impacted her life both on and off the scale..

“70 lbs in weight loss....the obvious, most visual benefit! I had no idea all the other benefits I would have in deciding to become a better, healthier me. I can run in the airport when I am late for a flight (which is often, I travel alot with work). I now enjoy the beautiful outdoors that Utah has to offer. I understand how the food we put in our body can really effect what you physically accomplish and do everyday. I have a much better understanding of how our body works physically and how every movement is connected. 

The changes in my emtional well-being have been noticed by many poeple as well. I now walk with a certain level of confidence, a confidence that wasn’t there before. Confidence because I am proud of the accomplishments and changes that I have been able to make. Confidence because of the steady improvements I have seen in myself. Confidence because I can do many more yoga poses (and do them right-kind of) than I could 15 months ago. Confidence because running has now become my favorite torture. Confidence because I have become my own inspiration. I know that there is more I need to learn and accomplish, but I also know that because of the lifestyle changes and committments I have made so far, I now have the confidence and belief in myself to make it happen!”

Billie's journey may have started with a single step but I know with her determination it could end in a marathon. She hasn't crossed the finish line yet, but she is well on her way. It has been an awesome experience to be able to watch her face her hurdles. 

We all face challenges, and we all have things about ourselves we would like to change. Maybe your challenges aren't the same as Billie's but if we can apply the same principles that Billie has used in her journey then we will all be sure to reach our destination. Thanks for the inspiration Billie. You are a rockstar. Keep going strong!
